The Green Bay Packers Release Kicker Anders Carlson
Departure After Two Seasons
The Green Bay Packers have released kicker Anders Carlson after two seasons with the team, NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported Tuesday. Carlson, 24, made 60 of 73 kicks (82.2%) in practice during training camp, while his competition, Greg Joseph, made 57 of 73 (78.1%).
Missed Field Goal Costly
Carlson's release comes after he missed a 41-yard field goal attempt in the preseason finale that would have given the Packers the win. The miss was Carlson's only attempt of the preseason, as Joseph handled the kicking duties in the first three games.
Promising Training Camp
Despite the missed field goal, Carlson had a strong training camp. He made a 54-yard field goal early in camp and was generally consistent throughout. However, Joseph's slightly better performance in practice ultimately earned him the starting job.
Practice Stats
- Carlson: 60 of 73 (82.2%)
- Joseph: 57 of 73 (78.1%)
Respectable Career
Carlson, who was originally signed by the Packers as an undrafted free agent in 2021, made 22 of 28 field goal attempts (78.6%) and 30 of 32 extra point attempts (93.8%) in 17 games over the past two seasons.
