Argentina's Embarrassing Loss to Colombia in World Cup Qualifier
A Historic Defeat for the Albiceleste
Argentina suffered a humiliating 5-0 defeat to Colombia in a World Cup qualifier on Saturday, marking one of the darkest days in the nation's football history.
The match, played at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires, saw Colombia dominate from start to finish. The visitors took the lead through Freddy Rincón in the 25th minute and never looked back. Faustino Asprilla added a second just before half-time, before a calamitous second half for Argentina.
José Herrera scored a third in the 46th minute, followed by another from Asprilla in the 57th. The final nail in Argentina's coffin was a penalty converted by Rincón in the 80th minute, completing the rout.
The defeat means Argentina must now face a playoff against Australia in order to qualify for the 1994 World Cup. Colombia, on the other hand, automatically qualifies for the tournament in the United States.
