Classic Cars in Florida
Antique Plates for Classic Cars
In Florida, to obtain an antique plate for your car, you must submit an application to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV). To qualify, your car must be at least 30 years old and have been unaltered from its original condition.
Defining a Classic Car
While Florida defines a classic car as one that is at least 30 years old, the general automotive industry typically considers a car to be a classic if it is at least 25 years old and has significant historical or cultural value. Additionally, some states may have their own specific criteria for defining a classic car.
Antique Motor Vehicles in Florida
Florida Statutes 320.086 defines an "ancient or antique motor vehicle" as one that is more than 25 years old and is used solely for exhibition purposes or for the transportation of people or property as a hobby, and not for general transportation.
Antique motor vehicles that meet these criteria and are registered with the FLHSMV are eligible for antique license plates. These plates have a unique design that distinguishes them from regular license plates and can add value to the vehicle.
